Problem Space

Farmers face numerous challenges, including limited access to timely information, crop diseases, inefficiencies in resource management, unpredictable weather, labor-intensive processes, and sustainability issues. These obstacles impede effective farm management, resulting in lower productivity and higher costs.

01 Research

I started by understanding the current landscape in precision farming space, starting with these questions

  • What are some existing options/tools that I can use for precision farming?

  • What problems do farmers face and how do they achieve the solution they need?

  • How can I improve on existing solutions and solve their issues?

Competitive Analysis

I started looking at some available options in the market that provide similar features. These three are most popular farming assistants, understanding what functionalities they offer and at what prices, helped me get insights into the core concept of our app.

While none of them offer a complete farming solution, we aim to bridge this gap with our product.

Surveys

I started with surveying around 50 villagers. Collecting user information helped me to

  • Get an in-depth understanding of the potential user and demographic.

  • Major problems they are facing while farming.

  • Whether they use a farming assistant or not.

Age group

Majority of the farming population is around 30-40 years of age, however there is also an equal distribution of age group between 15 - 30 and 40+.

Land Ownership

Majority of the farmers own around 1 - 10 acres of land and very few have more than 10 acres.

This will help to cater the needs in commensurate to the land area owned and will also help to determine the business aspect of the application.

Current Difficulties

Farmers face a major difficulty dealing with pests and harsh weather. Farm expenditure is also a problem for crops that require huge upfront investment like grapes and Indian jujube etc.

Farming Assistant Usage

Not many Indian farmers use any farming assistant or tools, this can mainly be due to the language barrier, as not many apps support regional languages, also farmers are not aware of such apps due to lack of exposure to technology.

Research Insights

For people who don't know much about technology, it is hard to do related stuff, similar is the case with using an app that facilitates farming.

From the surveys and some interviews we found that farmers can't understand the functionality of the app if they don't understand the language, and also they don't have much time to use the app, so the process of doing tasks and checking out field should be quick and hassle free.

We also collected valuable user feedback of people using competitive apps to understand what needs to be improved.

Key Pain Points
  • Quick access to all farm information.

  • Creating a multi-lingual app that supports all regional languages.

  • Giving Farmers an all-round solution for all their farming needs.

02 Synthesis

After I completed my research I started to analyzing and finding trends in the data this would help me further understand our target audience and curate a perfect solution that addresses the users pain-points.

Affinity Mapping

Getting all the features right for business as well as for the users is a challenging task, some things need to be compromised and some things need more attention, getting the right balance is always important for the business and also the end user.

This affinity map is based on the features of the application against their Importance to User vs Importance to Business.

Personas

I created personas of potential Greensat users based on the research and surveys. These personas represent an average farmer who can be our potential customer.

03 Visual Design

Next I created a color palette and typography that would go well with the brand's identity and help give the product a unique feel.

04 Challenges and Learning

  • This was my first big project in both designing and development, it was challenging to learn everything from scratch and delivering on time. I learned flutter for development and Adobe XD for design.

  • As Flutter was still a pretty new technology at that time I was forced to get out of my comfort zone and learn my way through trial and error, searching through stackoverflow and experimenting with available packages.

  • Spending time on research was almost not an option from the client with tight deadlines, I still managed to squeeze in some surveys and get some valuable information before I started designing.

  • I did the entire localization part of the application that makes it multiligual, learning state management and having fun exploring different languages.

  • We churned first production build (MVP) in about 3 months time and worked on progressively updating it with features and bug fixes.

Solution

Greensat is a mobile application that helps farmers to scout their fields and get updates regarding pest infestations and weather forecast on the go. It can also detecting crop diseases with built-in data model that is trained with several local diseases that can affect a crop.
